Aldrich served as a junior literary critic for the <cite>New York Evening Mirror</cite>, sub-editor of the <cite>Home Journal</cite>, and war correspondent for the <cite>New-York Tribune</cite></a> during the Civil War. He edited the <cite>New York Illustrated News</cite>, the Boston literary magazine <cite>Every Saturday</cite> (1865 to 1874), and <a href="http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pe.cgi?24910"><cite>The Atlantic Monthly</cite></a> (1881 to 1890).
