After 1945, and Lwów becoming Ukrainian, Lem moved with his parents to Krakow. He later was at home in a smaller village near that city. He emigrated with his wife and his son for six years (1983-1988) to Vienna, Austria, after martial law was introduced to Poland. When Solidarność and Glasnost took their effect they returned home. Shortlisted for The Man Booker International Prize 2005.
