His family left the United Kingdom for Nigeria in 1976, when Thompson was seven (thus he must have been born in 1968 or 1969). He grew up in Nigeria, where he studied medicine & social anthropology, and went on to specialise in psychiatry. He returned to the UK in 1998 and lives as of 2024 on the south coast of England.
