One of the few authors staying in Germany during the rule of the Nazis, while his books were banned & burned. He was not allowed to publish anymore within the country, but a friend of him founded in Switzerland which kept books in print and published his newer works. In addition, he worked secretly on the script for the movie "Münchhausen" (Josef von Báky, director), which was first shown in 1943. According to the 2004 biography "Erich Kästner" by Sven Hanuschek the author was very fond of the books "Die Zeitmaschine" / "The Time Machine", "Menschen, Göttern gleich" / "Men Like Gods" and - foremost - of "Die Welt des William Clissold" / "The World of William Clissold" (all by H. G. Wells). Winner of the 1960 Hans Christian Andersen Award.
