He was from 1982 to 2002 chief editor for the critical edition of the works of Franz Kafka. After that he worked as editor for , & ; he became director for the latter in 2015. In parallel he was professor at universities in Wuppertal, (North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany), West Berlin (Germany), and San Diego (California, USA).
