Josef and his younger brother sometimes collaborated as Brothers Čapek. Imprisoned in September 1939, he was was last seen in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in early April 1945; the exact date of death is unknown and his body was never found. Some sources claim that he died of typhus.
