Born Сергей Александрович Козерюк (Sergei Aleksandrovich Kozeryuk), but changed his legal name after his mother remarried. According to the author's memoirs, he was born on July 6, 1910 (June 23, 1910 Julian calendar), but a clerical error caused the date to be recorded as August 5, 1910 (July 23, 1910 Julian calendar).
