From The Oxford Book of Japanese Short Stories: A gentle, reclusive writer and poet who lived among farmers, and often wrote for children. Known for his unique cosmology, which combined modem science with animist and Buddhist beliefs. Although few of his works were published during his lifetime, he is widely read today.
