Christened upon his birth as <b>Otfried Syrowatka</b>; the author's father initiated in 1941 to change the family's legal name to Preußler. After being released from his encampment as a Russian prisoner of war he found his new home near Rosenheim, Bavaria, West Germany, where he became a teacher, active from 1955 until 1970. Highly Commended for the 1972 Hans Christian Andersen Award.
