In the 1970s he suffered an eye injury in an automobile accident, which made him particularly sensitive to the bright lights of movie sets and forced him to retire from acting. After that he began to concentrate on writing. As an actor, his first starring role was in the low-budget movie "Robot Monster" (1953).
