Born in Duluth, Minnesota and eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he met Ray Bradbury, who helped him find his first commissions. The name "Hannes Bok" was taken from "Johann Sebastian Bach". After working on Bradbury's fanzine Futuria Fantasia, he was noticed by Farnsworth Wright, then editor of Weird Tales, who invited him to do some interior illustrations for the magazine. He was influenced by, and corresponded with, Maxfield Parrish. He later helped the careers of younger artists like Jack Gaughan.
