A "very free adaptation" of the 1070 Kathasaritsagara. Burton writes: "It is not pretended that the words of these Hindu tales are preserved to the letter. ... I have ventured to remedy the conciseness of their language, and to clothe the skeleton with flesh and blood." He adapts only 11 of the 25 tales from the Kathasaritsagara. WorldCat says that this is "Adapted from the Vetālapañcaviṃśati", of which the Kathasaritsagara is one particular edition.
