From copyright page of 2009 Permuted Press edition: "Author's Note: I wrote the first draft of The Dead in 1980-81, and haven't revised it too much since, although around 1986 I added the Bonewolves and the scene where Legion reveals his true appearance. The book was originally published by Ace in 1989, long before Left Behind or the current zombie craze".
