Notes
10 stories, with introduction by Dashiell Hammett
The stories are 10 of the 21 in the 1931 anthology Creeps by Night: Chills and Thrills, which were selected by Hammett from public nominations (see that parent collection).
Unknown: whether Hammett revised or the publishers cut the introduction
Jointly the 1961 anthologies Creeps by Night and The Red Brain (see) contain 20 of the 21 stories. The exception is "A Woman Alone with Her Soul" (1912) by Thomas Bailey Aldrich, the oldest of the 21.
The 20 are not divided in tens by publication date, nor as first and second halves of the original sequence.
No printing or edition stated. Ten stories from Hammett's 1931 anthology "Creeps by Night: Chills and Thrills."
"La Maison" was translated by Jacques Chambrun as "The House"
"Die Spinne" was translated by Walter F. Kohn as "The Spider"
