The copyright page of the 2011 Gollancz tp bears the notions: A short extract from 'The Drone' was previously published under the title 'Fireflies' (...) 2008. A different version of 'The Trace' appeared in Interzone 214 (...) 2008; in that publication it was entitled The Trace of Him. A version of The Trace also appeared in the 2020 anthology Stories of Hope and Wonder; the copyright page for that anthology implies that it uses the version of the story contained within this novel.
