Conceived and completed in 1992 while Scarborough lived at McCaffrey's home in Ireland, originally to conduct research on folk music. McCaffrey had previously visited Scarborough in Alaska. "The two took turns writing and rewriting the manuscript ... The story will continue in two more volumes, which are to be written in the next two years on subsequent visits."
