Based on online reviews, the magic element in this book is apparently tenuous, but becomes much stronger in the sequel.
Here a half-Anglo boy visits his great-grandfather, a Native American (Acoma). It's a coming-of-age story in which "the mysterious Enchanted Mesa challenges Kendall to run as he never has before". (Kirkus Reviews, July 1999)
