Mistakenly taken by bibliographers for a Mowgli/Tarzan-type story from the title, presumably, but the heroine merely survived in the woods on her own years before the main action of the novel: "They used to say around Elk Crossin' that ol' Kippewa found me growlin' in a wolf den. But that's a damn' lie. I was eatin' bulrush-roots an' thinkin' about makin' a raft to float down the Little Winiska."
