Per Bleiler 4 stories included in the novel, "The Bagman's Story", "The Story of the Bagman's Uncle", "The Story of the Goblins Who Stole a Sexton" and "The True Legend of Prince Bladud", have supernatural content and are often anthologized. Clute/Grant also details the first 3 stories mentioned by Bleiler as contained in this novel.
- Bleiler's review gives the dates of the serial 1 shilling installments (issued in 20 parts from April 1836 to November 1837). This edition is the first single volume edition.
- The first printing is distinguished by the occurrence on p. 9 of a marginal note reading "Although we find this circumstance recorded as a "singular" one, in Mr. Pickwick's notebook, we cannot refrain from humbly expressing our dissent from that learned authority." This was removed from later printings.
