Reginald1 may credit the cover illustration H. R. Millar illustrated the contemporary 9-part serial that comprised "parts of" the book--and serial versions of 8 other Nesbit books The Strand, all of which were first published as books with his illustrations. In the serial and the 1905 US book (both viewed as e-copies at HathiTrust Digital Library) many illustrations are plainly signed "H.R. Millar 1902"; many are identical in the two formats.
