10 stories:
"Knot I" to "Knot X" and "Answers to Knot I", etc
The ten brief, humorous, mathematical stories --each evidently followed after some time by its Answer discussion-- were first published as an occasional series in {{a|Charlotte M. Yonge}}'s magazine The Monthly Packet of Evening Readings for Younger Members of the English Church, from April 1880 to March 1885 (unillustrated).
The 1885 book contains revisions, a preface by Carroll, and illustrations by {{a|Arthur B. Frost}}.
Knots III, V, VII, and X feature "overbearing aunt Mad Mathesis" and her niece.
