According to the author's foreword this book started out as a short novella (novelette?) written for John W. Campbell's "Analog" in 1967. Campbell rejected the novella because it had too many loose ends and suggested that Burkett expand it to novel length. In its final form, the book became a duology whose first volume was published in 2013.
