According to Pratchett's introduction in the collection "Dragons at Crumbling Castle and Other Stories" the novel(s) were based on the short fiction pieces "Tales of the Carpet People" and "Another Tale of the Carpet People", initially published in the Bucks Free Press paper's "Children's Circle" section.
The novel was extensively rewritten for the 1992 edition.
