A revised and expanded version of Burnett's 1888 serialized novella "Sara Crewe; or What happened at Miss Minchin's boarding school". Borderline speculative fiction. The "mysterious happenings" that occur to her are known by both the reader and the protagonist to be non-fantastical, although she enjoys pretending that they are magical. The one exception is the rat Melchisedec, who appears to have supernormal abilities to understand and respond to Sara. As Melchisedec does not appear in the original novella it is included in the database as a Non-Genre work.

• Wikipedia gives a page count of 324 pages. That count includes the 278 pages of our page count, front & back of 12 plates, front & back of tissue guard after the frontispiece, 4 pages before the page count, 2 pages after the page count, and 12 pages unaccounted for. The verifier's page count agrees with WorldCat's.

• "The Whole of the Story" is an "in-universe essay", where the author comments on the many things that happened to Sara Crewe that did not make it into the 1888 novella version of "Sara Crewe", nor into the 1902 play of that story. These facts and episodes, which the author "discovered" later, are being added into the original novella.
