Without mentioning rumours which agitated the population of the sea-ports, and extended to the interior of various countries, the maritime population were more particularly exercised in their minds."

The novel starts on page 5, previous pages (including table of contents) are unnumbered. Part 1 ends on page 253, followed by a page with an ad for one of the publisher's magazines. This is followed by a full page illustration for part 2, which would be prior to page 1 of part 2. Part II starts with a title page which has "Volume II" where "Complete Edition" is printed on the first title page but is otherwise the same. The novel continues after the table of contents on page 5. The chapters restart at I.
