The translation begins: On Sunday, 24 May 1863, my uncle, Professor Lidenbrock, hurried back to his little house at number 19, Königstrasse, one of the oldest streets in the Old Quarter of Hamburg. Our servant, Marthe, must have thought she was very late, for dinner was hardly beginning to sizzle on the kitchen stove.
