In October 1887, Collier's Saturday Journal 1887-10-01 started 'a new serial story by George Manville Fenn, entitled "The Man with a Shadow" '.

- Publication date 1888-08-20 (Monday) is from the full-page advertisement "Ward & Downey's New List" published two days earlier, The Athenaeum #3173 p237, this one featured and noted "[On the 20th inst." The book is reviewed in "New Novels" three weeks later, #3176 (1888-09-08) p317 --and not found 2019-03-13 in automated search of UK newspapers and magazines between those dates.
- Price not found in several September/October adverts and reviews. One later advertisement by Ward & Downey, The Athenaeum #3187 (-11-24) p688, lists no prices for any of "six new three-volume novels", as "At all Circulating Libraries"; and lists prices for all of "four new one-volume novels".
