This novel is based in part on a novelette entitled "St. Dragon and the George" copyright 1957 by Fantasy House, Inc. for the September 1957 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

The SFBC and Ballantine editions have two different covers by Vallejo

• "Book Club Edition" printed at the bottom of the front flap of the dustjacket indicates a printing by Doubleday for its various book clubs.
• The "Nelson Doubleday" imprint indicates an original publication for the Doubleday book clubs.
• Selection of the Science Fiction Book Club for July 1976.
• No printed price or stated date of publication. Both given here are taken from the SFBC announcement flyer.
• "2770" printed at the bottom on the back flap of the dustjacket.
• First printing has gutter code "G24" [verified] on page 243, indicates a printing in June 1976.
• Known reprint codes: "G38" (September 1976), "I05" (January 1978), "K25" (June 1980) [verified], "L35" [verified] (August 1981 with SFBC # on back cover), "P33" (August 1985) [PV7]
• "Jacket painting by Boris Vallejo" printed on the back flap of the dustjacket, the artwork is also signed.
• First printing has gold boards with blue lettering, 1981 printing same boards but black lettering
