44 tales "collected" by Jacobs, "illustrated" by Batten
One front page of the 1st ed. shows:
Ordinary Edition, 3000 copies printed October 1890; 5000 December 1890
Japanese Edition, 80 copies November 1890
(viewed at HathiTrust)
Jacob gives 1889 date in preface to More English Fairy Tales (1994):
"It might naturally have been thought that my former volume (English Fairy Tales, Nutt, 1889) had almost exhausted the scanty remains of the traditional folk-tales of England."
Not "juvenile" in the 1st ed., and others that contain the "Preface, Notes, References, and Parallels"--quoting announcement of the 1895 cheap ed. that omits those sections, retains the illustrations.
