Posthumous publication.
Begun in the year 1974 according to the afterword by Sherri Crichton, this novel was abandoned at an unknown later time: the research on dinosaurs likely has been used for "Jurassic Park".
Based on the competition between the paleontologists Marsh and Cope, this novel is mildly speculative in that it is ahistorical (as stated in the afterword): though set in the year 1876 the two competitors didn't meet in that year; there are also fictional meetings of Johnson with Wyatt Earp and Robert Louis Stevenson.
