{{Tr|William Lackland}}. This translation begins "There was a large audience assembled on the 14th of January, 1862, at the session of the Royal Geographical Society, No. 3 Waterloo Place,London. The president, Sir Francis M—, made an important communication to his colleagues, in an address that was frequently interrupted by applause."

First English edition. The London edition didn't come out until the following year. 6 full-page illustrations taken from an earlier French edition. Monotone cover in pebbled cloth done in at least four different colors: brown, red, green, and blue; each with gold foiled title on the spine and artwork on the front. Some information based on digital scan at babel.hathitrust.org and cover image and information from www.julesverne.ca. The page count on this book varies, as the publisher inserted a signature of advertising at the end of some (all?) of the books. Advertising signatures of 8 and 12 pages exist, and perhaps other variations as well. No "first state" priority has been established among the cover colors or advertising page counts. Title page has the title followed by "Compiled in French by Jules Verne, from the" over "Original Notes of Dr. Ferguson;" over "and Done Into English By" over ""William Lackland"" over "Expressly For" over the publisher "D. Appleton and Company," over "New York:" and dated 1869.
