The Family Book series was to be three books but after the first book (Special Effects) the publisher decided to end the series at two books. Material intended for the third book was woven into the second (Into the Darkness).
Both books are credited to "Kevin McCarthy with David Silva." The copyright pages though bear the somewhat puzzling statement "Copyright C 2001/2002 by Kevin McCarthy, Tekno Books, and Ed Gorman." Apparently Ed Gorman came up with the idea for the series and presented it to Tekno Books (Martin H. Greenberg). Tekno hired David B. Silva to ghost-write the series and sold the package to DAW books.
- First printing with a 1 to 9 number line.
- This publication is credited to David Silva on the front cover and David B. Silva on the title page.
- This publication is very unusual for DAW in that it does not have the DAW logo on the spine though in all other aspects it appears to be a standard DAW publication.
