The novel is "my adult fantasy" in contrast to the young-adult trilogy Draco Sang. The back cover blurb and dedication "to all my Scottish ancestors from the Clans" (viewed as "Look inside" at Amazon.com 2022-07-02) suggest that the story is inspired partly by Scottish clan warfare.
