Notes
This anthology has an uncredited prologue where a man is apparently being put to death at an Euthanasia Center. It is then followed by five stories, by five separate authors, that pick up the story at this point. Hence, Five Fates.
It is likely that Keith Laumer created the concept and wrote the prologue. The evidence for this is
- The cover and title page of the Warner Paperback Library edition (2nd printing) lists Laumer's name first even though his is the last story. The author order is "Five Fates / by / Keith Laumer / Poul Anderson / Frank Herbert / Gordon Dickson / Harlan Ellison".
- The copyright page of the Warner Paperback Library edition (2nd printing) has "Copyright © 1970 by Keith Laumer".
- {{OCLC|92450}} solely credits Keith Laumer.
- All five authors are listed on the cover, with no editor credited. However, in "The Glory Game" (issued by Doubleday) a list of "by Keith Laumer" titles appears opposite the title page, with this: "Five Fates (Editor)". L. W. Currey also lists the book as "anonymously edited by Laumer".
- "First Edition" and "© 1970 by Keith Laumer" on copyright page.
- Gutter code "L30" on page 256, indicating printed in late July 1970.
- L.W. Currey, Clute/Nicholls, Reginald and Contento1 list this edition under Laumer.
- $4.95 price on front jacket flap. "Jacket collage by Anita Siegel" on back flap.
