Mostly essays, but "When the Twerms Came" is a short story. According to Clarke, many of the essays were originally written during the 1960s and 1970s for various magazines; though many of them have extensive prefatory and/or concluding notes, the essays themselves were apparently only slightly, if at all, revised for the book.
