In some, if not all, publications of this title, the appendix material ("Names in the Lost Tales", glossary, index) is not explicitly credited to any author. However, it is reasonable to assume that Christopher Tolkien is the author, given that there is no other recorded editor of, or contributor to, the book. It is also highly unlikely that J. R. R. Tolkien is the author, as the book is basically a patchwork of notes compiled by Christopher Tolkien from "the tattered notebooks in which they were written." (quotation from foreword)
