Includes three forewords, by Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, and Gene Wolfe, and story notes by Paul Williams. Includes 46 short stories written between the end of 1937 and the beginning of 1940. This is volume 1 of a projected 10-volume project to print all of Sturgeon's short work, regardless of genre, and it includes previously uncollected (and even unpublished) stories. Although presented in chronological order based on date of composition, the dates given here follow the ISFDB standard of giving the date of first publication. "Strangers on a Train" was taken from an untitled and unpublished manuscript; the title was given by the collection's editor, Paul Williams.
