According to Currey, there is no statement of printing on the copyright page of this printing, the first. Pages 10-307 are offset from the World Publishing Co. edition of The Best Supernatural Stories of H. P. Lovecraft (1945), adding two additional stories on pages 308-431. Per Sheldon Jaffery, from The Arkham House Companion, the first printing can be distinguished from the subsequent 4 by:

• $5.00 price on dustwrapper.
• The photograph of Lovecraft on the back measures 92 mm x 111 mm.
• Back jacket flap lists Arkham House titles by Lovecraft.
• No headbands at the end of the spine.

The colophon states 3000 copies were printed. The actual number is 3133 copies per S.T. Joshi's Sixty Years of Arkham House. Derleth Thirty Years of Arkham House: 67. Joshi Sixty Years of Arkham House: 67. Jaffery The Arkham House Companion: 71. Nielsen Arkham House Books: 71.
