15 stories, 1894 to 1895 This was the first UK collection of Wells containing speculative fiction stories, and his second-published literary book after the non-genre Select Conversations With an Uncle [...] (1895), a joint UK/US publication.

Ten of 15 stories are included in the 1897 US collection Thirty Strange Stories. The five others were uncollected in the US for many years: • Through a Window (1894) • The Temptation of Harringay (1895) • The Flying Man (1895) • The Diamond Maker (1894) • The Hammerpond Park Burglary (1894), non-genre

In the 1895 Methuen ed. (viewed at HathiTrust) this untitled note on previous publications precedes the Contents list:   (quote) Most of the stories in this collection appeared originally in the Pall Mall Budget, two were published in the Pall Mall Gazette, and one in St James's Gazette. I desire to make the usual acknowledgments. The third story in the book was, I find, reprinted by the Observatory, and the "Lord of the Dynamos" by the Melbourne Leader. (flushright) H. G. Wells
