The title story was first published as "The Quest of Tarzan", a three-part serial in Argosy, starting on August 23, 1941.

First edition so stated on copyright page. "Some later copies (distributed after 1 January 1965) have cancel sticker affixed to copyright page bearing corrected date "©1964". About 400 copies were distributed in December 1964 without the sticker." - Currey Verification copy has sticker with copyright dates for each story on copyright page over original copyright date. It shows copyright date for this publication as 1964. Illustrations are on unnumbered pages opposite the page numbers in the contents. The frontispiece is the same illustration as the cover art.
