This is actually a collection disguised as a novel. Skipp & Spector wanted to do a collection but were convinced to make it a novel for market reasons, so they just included many of their published stories as if they were written by the main character of the novel. Some were left intact while others were massively reworked. These include The Long Ride (1982), Go to Sleep (1983), Not with a Whimper (1988), I've Been Waiting All My Life to Meet You (1988), Meat Market (1987), The Spirit of Things (1985), Shells (1986), Gentlemen (1987), and Deadlines (1988). From the acknowledgments page of the 1989 Bantam edition: "Portions of this book have previously appeared in Twilight Zone, Night Cry, Borderland, The Architecture of Fear, and The Year's Best Fantasy".
