Author's Edition with facsimile of a handwritten page that is actually signed by hand. A list of subscribers is in the rear of the book. This is the First edition of this book. Although I have always assumed this book was published by Robert Clarke, I have seen that some copies have an Acknowledgments leaf laid or tipped into the book. It credits the composition by Standard Publishing Company, Cincinnati; electrotyping by Winkelman & Burbank, Cincinnati; the exquisite presswork and binding by Cranston & Curts, Cincinnati; photogravure by Rombach & Groene, Cincinnati; and the half-tone engravings and frontispiece by The Photo-electrotype Engraving Company, New York City. I also have a Second edition published by Robert Clarke. This book went through 10 "Editions" which were actually printings, the Author's Edition and Nine editions published by Robert Clarke. These "Editions" were actually printings of the book. As far as I know little if anything was changed from the 2nd edition through the 10th edition. Minor changes were made between the Author's edition and the Robert Clarke editions, but they had more to do with the list of subscribers, the introduction, etc. I think little if any changes were made to the actual text of the book. On May 16, 1897 three excluded chapters of the book were published in the Cincinnati Commercial Tribune. These changes were later incorporated in the 11th edition in 1901. This 11th edition was reprinted a number of time over the next 20 years or so by Dodd, Mead & Co., the earliest has a 1901 date on the title page. The Dodd, Mead editions were sold in several different bindings. There was also an edition published by The Caxton Press of the 11th edition, although I can't tell much about that printing. I saw copies years ago, but paid little attention to them as they were later printings. They are marked "Printed for the Author by The Caxton Press" with no place or date, so I have to assume they either preceded the Dodd, Mead printings, of the came after them. One listing on Worldcat gives them a 1920 date. I have owned 3 or 4 copies of the Author's Edition as well as a number of the various later editions. I still own an Author's Edition, a Second Edition (Second Printing), and a copy of the Eleventh Edition with 1901 on the title page.
