This is a prequel to Allan Quatermain (1887), in featuring Quatermain's Zulu companion Umslopogaas as a young man. It is "unusual for a Victorian novel in that its entire cast of characters is South African and black."
--Wikipedia
(ISFDB series Zulu Nation contains this work alone because Haggard's other Zululand stories are in series Allan Quatermain. This one is set earliest among them, c. 1800 per Wikipedia.)
Published as a serial in The Illustrated London News, 1892-01-02 to 1892-05-07, with illustrations by {{a|R. Caton Woodville}}.

(Dates not confirmed. One unknown source reports year 1891, no dates.)
Published the same year as the UK edition. From the page numbering, it appears to be identical to the UK edition except that the title page lists New York instead of London. The copyright page saws that it was printed by Trow Directory Printing and Bookbinding Company New York. If the 'Bibliographical Note' statement on the copyright page of the later Newcastle Publishing edition of this book (1979) is correct, this American edition preceded the UK edition by just over a week.
