Sometimes attributed to Carmen Sylva, a well-known writer and the preceding Queen of Romania. That is, "Carmen Sylva" was the pseudonym of Elisabeth, queen consort of Romania to October 2014 and queen dowager thereafter. (She was the author's aunt-in-law, as the crown or Romania passed from uncle to nephew.) For instance see two e-copies of the undated 1st ed. • HathiTrust Digital Library: 100000380 as by Carmen Sylva, 19-- • Internet Archive: dreamerofdreams00sylv as by Carmen Sylva, 1900 Amazon reports "a pre-1923 historical reproduction that was curated for quality" (Bibliolife, 2009) {{ASIN|1115519182}}, which credits Carmen Sylva on the front cover.

See the 1st ed. for more information.

  • The book is undated, but WorldCat lists it as [1915], implying their belief in that as a publication date. This date is verified by the dates of the reviews listed below.
  • 1st ed.; a Christmas gift book, but a break with the annual series from Dulac and Hodder & Stoughton, as an original story and having only 6 illustrations
  • The board cover has a somewhat abstract design of a sword. The dust jacket contains a copy of the frontispiece plate, pasted onto the jacket paper. We include both in the attached image.
  • Each plate is accompanied by a guard sheet on which is printed the caption for the plate. The plates are tipped onto tan pages printed with a frame for the plate. (The leaves are not included in the pagination.) These plates are the "+[6]" shown in our pagination count.
  • No price on the book. Price from reviews The Scotsman 1915-12-09 p2 (as by "Carmen Sylva", the preceding queen consort; very positive) and Manchester Guardian -12-14 p4 (brief, negative)
  • "Dedicated to my daughter Ileana" (Princess Ileana of Romania (1909–1991) per Wikipedia)
  • HathiTrust Digital Library (catalog record) shows another copy as by "the Queen of Rumania" aka "Carmen Sylva". Marie's mother-in-law Elisabeth, a well-known writer as Carmen Sylva, was Queen dowager in 1915.
