Marvin Kaye, in Angels of Darkness, gives the credit as "A Folk Tale Retold by W. B. Yeats." It is from Yeats's Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry, which he edited rather than retold; in the anthology, his note on the source of "The Countess Kathleen O'Shea" is, "This was quoted in a London-Irish newspaper. I am unable to find out the original source."
Since then the actual author had been found.
