From page 2 of the Pyramid first edition - "About the Cover: The bearded, haloed satyr on the cover is a representation of the author by Ed Emsch, and was originally contracted for by Joe Ferman, publisher of Fantasy and Science fiction, and its editor Avram Davidson for a "Special Sturgeon Issue" of that wonderful magazine.
A close examination of the painting will show the cognoscenti That Emsch is indeed a perceptive and subtle student of Sturgeon and his works. Here are the shining machines, the passion, the magic and the outrageous which have always moved the undersigned and made him write.
The original painting now hangs on my wall, and will be close to me wherever I live for the rest of my life. I cannot pass up this opportunity to thank Messrs. Ferman and Davidson, and most especially Mr. Emsch, from the bottom of my heart. - Theodore Sturgeon."
