From Scenes and Adventures in Central America. The 'editor' of this work, Francis Hardman, readily admits in his preface to having condensed, adapted or outright fabricated incidents based upon the German travelogue Süden und Norden (3 vols., 1842-1846) by Charles Sealsfield (Karl Postl). For a true translation see North and South; or Scenes and Adventures in Mexico (1844-as by 'Seatsfield')-probably translated by Joel T. Headley.
Later published in Blackwood's Magazine, 1853 as well.
