This title represents two illustrations from "The Book of Lost Tales: Part I" that appear as part of the story "The Coming of the Valar":
- A scribbled map that is an early conception of the Western Lands, and the Oceans
- A drawing, in which the world is seen in section, and is represented as a "Viking" ship. This drawing also appears in duplicate as a frontispiece to the whole book
The accompanying text makes it clear that the illustrations were drawn by J. R. R. Tolkien.
