According to Michael Kelahan in his introduction to this story in the anthology The Screaming Skull and Other Classic Horror Stories this story was originally translated into English in 1909 as "The Grip of Fear", and was originally published in Le Journal in France in 1906. The Black Mask appearance was a reprint of the 1909 translation.
