The first part was originally published as "The Escaped Cock" in Forum, 1928. The full story was first published as a separate book, The Escaped Cock (Black Sun Press, Paris) in September 1929. Then titled The Man Who Died (Secker, London) in September 1931.
According to Wikipedia, Lawrence preferred his title The Escaped Cock and negotiated that it would be retained as the subtitle of a British edition as The Man Who Died.
